Style is a term that is frequently brought forth in today’s fast-paced society. Defined as “a particular kind, sort, or type, as with reference to form, appearance, or character” (Merriam-Webster), style can be associated with a variety of topics and most often, fashion. Style is immensely diverse and can thus differ for each individual in relation to how one perceives it.
Since style ranges among individuals, how we define it can also be impacted by our perception of it. Josie Bachman (So.) defines the general term of style as “a way of being original, showing personality and traits.” She utilizes style as “a way of being different and showing creativity” and thus, presents her individuality to others.
The general definition of style results from not only our view of it, but also from how we show our personal style through clothing. Amir Aftabi (Jr.) said, “Style is a way of making a statement form and can say a lot about your personality.” In addition, he emphasizes his use of fashion to create a style that makes a specific first impression on others, saying, “I like wearing bold and daring clothes because they tell the world that I’m bold and daring.”
Another point that is frequently discussed in regards to style is whether or not it is truly necessary in our society and whether or not it has an impact on individuals. A firm supporter of the importance and necessity of style, Angelica Busciglio (Jr.) said that “Clothes are not an armor in which we should hide beneath to keep everybody out but rather, to communicate what we think or feel as the artist within. Style is about having confidence in who you are or to help discover who you are and trust yourself without fear of judgment.” She argued the importance of style, and said, “Having that confidence is why style is so important.”
With that in mind, to gain a better understanding of the broad spectrum of style, it is beneficial to consider the definition of it as a general term, how it affects the way in which we use fashion to dress and create our own personal style and whether or not we consider it to be of great value in our society.
