The UHS varsity boys golf team started the season off strong with a 193-213 win against Laguna Hills High School on March 1 at its home course, Strawberry Farms.
UHS faced Huntington Beach High School (HBHS) on March 10 and defeated them 185-198, in a strong match to rebound from a 214- 196 loss to HBHS the previous week.
Both teams played front 9-par 36.
On March 15, UHS continued its streak with a 178-191 win against Corona del Mar High School (CDM) at the Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine.
The Trojans have four seniors returning to the team, Koichiro Sato (Sr.), Jordan Cheng (Sr.), Ryan Kurniawan (Sr.) and Ari Liu (Sr.).
The seniors hope to be leaders and help the team’s younger players perform their best in the upcoming season.
Cheng said, “The team has a lot of potential this year to place in CIF. We are gaining steam because right now; we are playing for the team, not only for ourselves.”
William Tse (Jr.) added, “One of our team’s strengths is that we give a hundred percent on the course and it will take us to our goal of being first in league.”
Last year, the team placed second in league play but did not make it past the first round of the playoffs.
This year’s influx of new, young players, however, is a great sign for the team’s potential this year and for years to come.
“We are a young team, but we have potential. Our goal is to improve upon last year and I’m sure we can do it,” Sato said, when asked what might be in store for the team this year.
The team is currently 3-1 in pre-season.
League play begins on March 22 away against Beckman High School (BHS) at the Tustin Ranch Golf Course.
