Girls Varsity Golf defeated Beckman High School on September 13th to solidify their position as the number one ranked girls golf team in OC by a marginal 3 points. Coming into the game ranked just above second place Beckman, UHS squeezed out a victory with a score of 189 to Beckman’s 192. It marked their first victory against Beckman in the past 4 years.
Captain Celine Nie (Sr.) felt it was a special match. “Coming out of this match victorious was one of the best feelings because we’ve worked especially hard this year focusing on positivity and team bonding,” Nie said, “I’m so excited for the remainder of our season and this win shows everyone we are [the] team to watch out for.”
After making CIF consecutively for the past couple of years, UHS seems primed to take the first spot this year. Samantha Cabunag (Jr.) and Nodoka Honda (Soph.) are returning players who qualified as individual golfers last year.
Kirstin Shea (Jr.) mirrored the same feeling of confidence. “Yesterday wasn’t even our best round as a team, and we still managed to win by 3 strokes.” Shea said, “I think this made us pumped for the rest of season and made us more confident as a team.”
Notably, both captains did not play. The team consisted of three juniors, two sophomores, and a freshman. Dana Choi (Soph.) and Coco Yang (Fr.) are primed to lead the younger generation of players along with Honda. Choi said, “I love playing with my partner, Coco [Yang], because she is so talented and only motivates me to do even better.”
UHS now looks forward to their next away game against CDM, who is currently ranked third, on September 20th.
