During last Tuesday’s Pink Out GOW, University Girls Varsity Tennis dominated long time rival Woodbridge with a final score of 14-4. Because UHS is ranked fifth in CIF Division I and Woodbridge is unranked, the girls were expected to win by a significant margin.
“[The game was] a nice way to end my last game ever,”Varsity Captain Ashlyn Wang (Sr.) said.“I loved how everyone came to support and cheer us on and I felt that our team really bonded which is needed for CIF playoffs next week.”
In the game, Dana Feng (So.), Kamar Alajeely (So.), and Kayla Agustin (Jr.) racked up the wins in singles. Feng won three games with scores 6-0, 6-1, and 6-0. Kajeely also won three games with scores 6-2, 6-3, and 6-1, and Agustin defeated Woodbridge with scores 6-2, 6-2, and 6-0.
“The game was a lot of fun because a lot of people showed up to support,” spectator Vignesh Iyer (Sr.) said, “and the atmosphere was great because we won almost all of the matches and that kept it interesting.”
In doubles, the pair Ashlyn Wang (Sr.) and Sasha Iraniha (Jr.) won two games with scores of 6-0 and 6-0 respectively while partners Jacklyn Yoon (Soph.) and Tiffany Markus (Jr.) won two games with scores of 6-1 and 6-0 respectively. The duo Adriana Pinto (Soph.) and Vicki Li (Sr.) won 6-1 in one of their games.
“I have seen the varsity girls at practice and they put a lot of effort into things,” Hannah Woo (Fr.), member of the JV team, said, “and I watched them put all that into the game and I hope to do that when I go to varsity.”
With this win, University anticipates to maintain the team’s standing as second place in Orange County. In the next game on Tuesday November 2, the Varsity Girls will participate in CIF playoffs. The details of this game, however, are still undecided.
