Girls Varsity Tennis dominated Laguna Beach High School 17-1 at their first CIF playoff game on Wednesday, November 3. UHS headed into the match ranked fifth in CIF.
The Trojans only lost three games in the first and second rounds, allowing UHS to put in substitutes during the third round. In the first round, the three doubles teams consisting of Tiffany Markus (Jr.) and Ashlyn Wang (Sr.), Adriana Pinto (So.) and Kayla Agustin (Jr.), and Vicki Li (Sr.) and Jacklyn Yoon (So.) swept with scores of 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, respectively. They were joined by the singles players Halla Alajeely (Sr.), Dana Feng (So.) and Kamar Alajeely (So.) who also swept with all three scores 6-0.
Confident that they would overpower Laguna Beach, Coach Kessler switched up the doubles teams to experiment in preparation for more difficult matches.
Singles swept, dropping only one game in the entire match. Doubles won all except one, securing the victory for UHS.
“Although Vicki and I have never played together before and I was nervous for my first CIF match,” Doubles player Jacklyn Yoon (So.) said. “We played well and overpowered the other team.”
UHS continues their CIF journey as they are set to play Martin Luther King High School next at home on Friday, November 4.
