Varsity Girls Basketball won three of four games at the South Coast Tournament this past week. The tournament was hosted jointly by UHS and Woodbridge from November 28 to December 3.
The team’s first game of the tournament ended in a 55-31 victory against Yorba Linda on Monday, November 28.
Wednesday’s game was extremely close with UHS winning 41-39 over Tesoro. Karissa Shin (Jr.) drained two free throws in the last seconds of the game to secure the lead, ultimately leading to a UHS victory. “I felt really pressured and nervous as I made the shots since they would determine whether we lost or won,” Shin said. “I just took a deep breath and tried to keep my cool.”
The team lost their third game game 32-48 to Huntington Beach on Thursday. “I think we lost because we turned the ball over a lot and didn’t talk to each other,” point guard Malia Goldsmith (So.) said.
Their final game was won 60-47 against Foothill High School on Saturday. “We were able to win some really hard games because we had good communication and were able to work together as a team,” Ashley Chandler (Jr.) said. “It’s too early to tell how we’re going to do this season, but we’ve got a great team this year. We’re definitely going for league.”
“We played really good defense and we worked very well as a team,” Coach Bradshaw (Math Dept.) said. “Of course, there are always areas for improvement. I think we have to strive to be better players individually to be better as a team.”
