In a game against the Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits (LBP) on Thursday, December 15, the Girls Varsity Water Polo team lost by a final score of 15-7.
In Thursday’s matchup, Captain Chandlyr Denaro (Sr.) had yet another great game. Recording four goals and two assists, she is currently the number one goal scorer for UHS. After tonight’s loss, Girls Water Polo falls to 4th in pre-league standings.
LBP scored the first three goals of the game, making it 3-0 at the end of the first quarter. All of these goals consisted of counterattacks and shots from outside of five meters.
In the second quarter, University would go on to score three goals by the end of the half, two of which came from Denaro. Although the girl’s started to recover from a scoreless first quarter, the Jackrabbits matched it with four of their own goals in the second. At the end of the first half, the score was 7-3.
The third quarter brought with it three more goals from LBP and a goal for Uni that came off of a hard shot from Caitlyn Kissinger (So.). The score became 10-4 going into the final quarter.
The Trojans would score three more goals before the final whistle blew. Denaro was able to add two of these three remaining goals into her point total.
Head Coach Braham Hojreh (Athletic Dept.) feels optimistic about the rest of the season.
“[The girls team] would like to qualify top 3 in league and can claim a playoff spot.”
The girls look to bounce back after winter break and look to the future. The next game will mark the start of league as the Trojans face off against the Beckman Patriots that will take place at home on Thursday, January 5.
