Boys Varsity Basketball triumphed over the Warriors by a score of 63-38 on Thursday night, January 19 at Woodbridge High. This win comes a month after a 20 point pre-season blowout of the Warriors in their previous matchup. With the win, the Trojans improve to a 2-2 league record and move to third place in PCL.
Once again, UHS showcased strong defensive pressure with their signature full court press and held Woodbridge to fewer than ten points in three of the four quarters. By building an early eight point first quarter lead, the Trojans were able to continue their surge into halftime with a score of 32-21.
Guard Kevin Yahampath (Jr.) came out firing from behind the arc and had a team high of 18 points with five impressive three-pointers. Yahampath dominated all night long and fueled the offensive attack in which half of UHS’s points came from beyond the arc.
“I just got in a rhythm with my stroke and tried to keep the defense off balance while doing so,” Yahampath said.
UHS outscored the Warriors by 11 points in the third quarter, placing the Trojans at an advantage for the rest of the game.
Other contributors included shooting guard Mitchell Kauker (Sr.), who racked up 14 points, guard Joe Christensen (Sr.), who put up 10 points, shooting guard Alex Bray (Jr.), who scored eight points, and center Ryan Pham (Sr.), who had six points.
“Tonight’s performance really shows what this team is capable of and if we stick to our game plan going forward, we’re going to be fine” Christensen said.
Despite the game being played in Warrior territory, the UHS student cheering section was in full spirit as they witnessed their rival school being dominated.
“It was fun to see a great turnout from Uni, especially at an away game. It always feels good to beat Woodbridge and that game was a murder” Spirit Rally Commissioner Francisco Lazo (Sr.) said.
The Trojans look to rack up another win in their next game against Irvine on Tuesday, January 24, on route to a winning record.
