Boys Varsity Soccer won its fourth game in a row to continue its PCL title race. After a dominating 5-0 victory against Northwood, the team appears to be in top form heading down the stretch.
Northwood was no match for the Trojans, conceding goals both early and late in the first half, making the score 2-0 at halftime. UHS went on to score three more in the second half, giving them a comfortable lead throughout the game, as well as increasing their league goal margin to 16.
A major asset of the team so far has been its contribution from several playmakers. The five goals scored were netted by five different players: Sam Kelley (Jr.), Sebastian Hertel (So.), Pedro Palmaka (So.), Lee McEligot (So.), and Faris Qaisi (Jr.).
Hertel and Palmaka are first and third in total goals scored on the team, respectively, while McEligot and Qaisi scored their first goals of the season. Kelly has given an excellent, efficient return on his playing time, netting six and assisting four goals in his 7 games played.
The team is involved in a highly competitive title race, currently sitting second behind Corona del Mar. The Trojans, 6-1-0 in league, have been aiming to steal the top spot in PCL from CdM, currently 5-0-1 in league. It has provided a common goal for the entire team to focus and rally upon.
“This game meant a lot to us, being that we had to send CdM a message, that we’re not coming to their place for a pick up league game, but a fight for the league title,” McEligot said.
The team now races ahead to what may be the most important fixture of the season. They travel to the home ground of CdM with serious implications; whoever wins the matchup will end the day as the top team in PCL. The match will be played Thursday, February 2.
