This past Friday, Girls Varsity Basketball played CdM at home and won by a score of 44-21.
After the win, the team currently has an overall league record of 7-1, with their only loss coming against Woodbridge. University currently stands alone at first place in PCL.
The Lady Trojans started off the first quarter strong both offensively and defensively. The Trojans kept CdM to only three points while scoring 18 points.
In the second quarter, the Trojans were able to repeat their success on the defensive side of the ball and kept the Sea Queens to three points again. After scoring nine unanswered points, University went into the half ahead of CdM 27-6.
The first half’s success was due to key steals and rebounds in both offense and defense. In the second half, substitutions played a huge role in extending the lead in the game. The Trojans would go on to score 17 points, having only allowed 15 points from their opponents.
University’s display of teamwork was a big contributor to their success. The Trojans scoring came from eight different players, a season high.
One star shooter was Captain Kaci Blailock (Sr.), who had 14 points on the night. Having been able to hit key jump shots and layups, Blailock was able to find her rhythm early in the first quarter.
When asked on her performance, Blailock said, “It was an overall team effort and we went into the game confident.”
The only loss in league was against Woodbridge who is currently 6-2 and is one game behind UHS in PCL standings. With one more win, the Trojans will have clinched first in PCL and will go into CIF with a high seed.
One player who is enthusiastic of their current position is forward Ashley Chandler (Jr.).“I’m really proud of my team this year,” Chandler said. “We fight hard every single game and if we lose, we always bounce back”
Having only lost one game, the girls team looks to complete the rest of the season and go into CIF finishing in first place in PCL. With only two games left in league, the Trojans will take on Irvine and Woodbridge in the following weeks.
