Boys Varsity Soccer drew 1-1 against Corona del Mar in a fixture with massive league implications. Behind CdM by a point, the Trojans were hoping to vault into the top spot in the league. However, with this draw both teams were rewarded with a single point leaving UHS still one point behind CdM.
Both teams were in good form entering the match as they looked to extend a four-game win streak. The Sea Kings had dealt the Trojans their only loss on the season, and once again did not lose against the Trojans, ranked 142 in the country and 40 in the state.
In a game with such monumental pressure, nerves were bound to show. Both teams missed potential momentum-changing opportunities, none more crucial than CdM’s penalty kick.
Around the 65 minute mark, the referee called a foul against the Trojans in the penalty box leading to a CdM PK. However, nerves got to the player taking the PK for the Sea Kings as the penalty was launched a few feet over the bar.
The result will leave the Sea Kings satisfied and the Trojans wanting for more. Goal scorer Luis Moros (So.) said, “I think yesterday’s game was completely in our control and we were dominating them but we weren’t able to just finish our chances to seal the win.”
UHS looks ahead to their next fixture, a home game against Irvine on February 6.
