Boys Varsity Soccer defeated Irvine 2-0, extending their unbeaten run to six games now. After a tough draw against league-leading Corona del Mar, the team responded by winning comfortably over Irvine, giving them three more points.
Still behind the high-flying Sea Kings by one point, the Trojans will need to win their last league game against Woodbridge to give them a chance to claim the league title. In addition, CdM will need to drop points against a floundering Irvine team who has a mere 4 points in league. UHS has played Woodbridge once before this season and beat the Warriors 3-1.
A tight first half meant that the game was tied 0-0 at the half. However, a second-half brace from Sam Kelley (Jr.) off of two assists from Darious Abdollahi (Jr.) was all the Trojans needed to top the Vaqueros. Kelley has scored eight goals in eight appearances, whereas Abdollahi has assisted nine times in nine games, putting him in second on the team for assists.
It is a good result for the Trojans as not only are they trying to edge CdM for the league title, but they are also currently ranked first in the Division 4 CIF-SS rankings.
“After a difficult game against [CdM], we had to bounce back. Our performance throughout the game wasn’t our usual best, but we got the result. The win made our senior night enjoyable, but most importantly positively influenced our CIF placement,” midfielder Lee McEligot (So.) said.
The team now looks ahead to their final fixture of the league, a road game against Woodbridge on February 9.
