Boys Varsity Basketball fell to the rival Warriors 77-72 on senior night, February 9 in a fourth quarter meltdown. With the loss, UHS must play Beckman in a tie-breaker game on February 10.
After getting off to an early seven point lead in the first quarter, the Trojans maintained the lead 33-26 going into halftime and even had a healthy 17 point lead at one point.
PCL league leader in points per game, Alex Bray (Jr.) was in his usual elementt and put up 22 points. Point guard Joe Christensen (Sr.) added 16 points to the offensive effort.
The fourth quarter was a different story, as Woodbridge erupted for 32 points, twice as many as UHS. Woodbridge had momentum on their side, but the Trojans had plenty of chances to pull off the victory.
A key moment came with only 30 seconds left to play when Joe Christensen scored a 3 pointer and a foul, but missed the free throw, which could have been a four point play to cut the deficit to two points. UHS had a chance to tie it up on their next possession but the three ball would not fall, giving Woodbridge the victory.
“This was a tough loss tonight but I am confident in our game plan tomorrow with all the preparation we have put in as a team up to this point,” Christensen said.
Following the Trojans’ loss and remaining PCL games, the league standings remain with CDM and Northwood moving on, but more importantly a three-way tie for the third and final playoff spot between UHS, WHS, and BHS.
CIF held an official coin toss the same night and granted Woodbridge the winner, giving them a one game bye. As a result, UHS will play Beckman on February 10 in a wildcard format and the winner of that game will play Woodbridge for the last playoff spot.
