In the final game of the league, Girls Varsity Basketball lost to Woodbridge at home 47-43. Going into the game, Woodbridge and University were tied for first place with an even record in league. After the loss, UHS finished second in league with the Warriors finishing off in first.
The fourth quarter was an all out battle as the girls in blue fought to regain the lead. The quarter started off with the Warriors leading the Trojans 34-27. Due to quick passing and key three pointers, the Trojans were able to come within 4 points with the score at 41-37.
With three minutes left in the game the Trojans managed to score six points, but the Warriors were too much and went on to score six of their own points. The game ended with the Warriors winning 47-43.
It was Malia Goldsmith (So.) who shined bright in the final stretch of the game. Having scored 17 points, ten of which came in the fourth quarter, Goldsmith was able to keep the Trojans in the game and kept the game close.
“We almost had them in the end, but we finished hard and that is the momentum we need to build off of,” Goldsmith said.
Although the Trojans lost the league championship, they have a positive outlook on their season. The team looks forward to playoffs and their chances on going far. One person who is certainly excited for CIF is Senior Saptain Kaci Blailock.
“Our chances of going deep into playoffs are good. We are definitely one of the stronger teams in our division,” Blailock said.
Having finished in second place, girls basketball will likely face a team similar to their skill level and a team with a similar record.
As this marks the end of league, the girls end their season with a league record of 7-3 and an overall record of 18-8. The Lady Trojans are to play Lakewood on Thursday, February 16 for CIF playoffs.
