The UHS Boys and Girls Varsity Track teams defeated Godinez High School on Thursday, March 9 at the UHS stadium in the first home meet of the season. The boys won 61-59 and girls won 95-31.
Captain Luke Ruan (Sr.) ran the 300 hurdles and got second with a time of 46.01. “I think the meet went pretty well but it’s still early in the pre-season so our team has plenty of potential to grow in the upcoming months,” Ruan said.
Harry Baker (Sr.) had a huge day by breaking the school record by .04 seconds in the 200m with a time of 22:26. Another notable performance came from Jeremy Koo (Jr.) who ran a 52.1 in the 400 to take first place.
400m hurdle runner Michael Wu (Jr.) was in position for first, but fell and came away withthird place instead. He was two seconds away from breaking his PR , “It was just fun to go out there and compete alongside my teammates,” he said.
400 meter runner Pacific Eng (Sr.) said, “It was nice to have our full team this meet since a lot of our runners were still in other sports last week. It was our first home meet so there was a ton of energy and excitement from the runners and the audience.”
Pacific was also impressed with the underclassmen. “It was also really cool to see a lot of underclassmen step up since I’m a senior and I know the track team will still be the same even after I’m gone.”
For the girls team, Sarah Sussman (So.), Paige Metayer (Jr.), and Ceci Langlois (So.) ran the 400 meter and 800 meter. Metayer ran a 55 in the 400 and a 2:30 in the 800, while Sussman ran a 1:01 in the 400 and a 2:36 in the 800. Langlois finished right behind Sussman in the 800.
“I thought the meet went really well and even though it is only preseason we are showing a lot of potential as a team and it makes me excited for the season to come,” girls Captain Janine Bryant (Sr.) said.
Both boys and girls track have high ceilings this year and look to compete strongly in league.
