After four years of awaiting the third installment to Marvel Studios’ Thor franchise, Thor Ragnarok has finally come to theaters. Unlike the other installments from the Thor franchise, the newest installment incorporates more comedy in the film to lighten up the tone and make it more enjoyable for viewers, especially the younger ones.

Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, returns to Asgard after having dreams about the destruction of Asgard, in an event known as Ragnarok. This is where he meets his sister, The God of Death, Hela. Hela takes over Asgard and claims the throne after Odin, Thor and Hela’s father, dies. Thor now has to fight back to restore peace on Asgard with the help of his brother Loki, the Hulk, and Valkyrie.

While the movie is still action-packed there isn’t much depth to the story. Portions of the movie feel dragged and unnecessary but do add comical value to the movie, unique to a majority of the Marvel movies. This new installment has no ties to the previous Thor movie nor to the other Marvel films. However, this lack of attachment to other Marvel films means that anyone could watch the new installment of the Thor franchise without feeling lost.

Despite the plot of the movie, the characters in this movie are superbly well-acted. However, Thor’s character is the only character to develop in the movie while Loki and Valkyrie are background characters that add few components to the plot. Mark Ruffalo’s character, the Hulk, in particular, seems to be forced into the plot without genuine intention. This film would have been better suited to add more to the story and connect it to prior and future Marvel movies and eliminate some of the action scenes. Overall, Thor: Ragnarok is a unique twist to the Thor franchise through the use of comedy but still lacks the depth that many fans of the franchise would have expected.
