Tomb Raider hasn’t been on the silver screen for a while, but on March 16th the remake of Tomb Raider was released. Fans were surprised to not see Angelina Jolie, but luckily, Alicia Vikander made an exemplary substitution as Lara Croft. I’m an ecstatic fan of the films and especially the video games, so when I first saw the trailer for this film, I knew I had to watch it.
Lara Croft, the daughter of a fierce adventurer, goes on an expedition to an island called Yamatai, to locate her father and unearth the goddess of death, Himiko. With her sharp-wits and cunning fighting skills, Lara is able to break past anyone or anything that stops her from achieving her goal.
Tomb Raider begins with Lara in a big city. She delivers food, has many friends and occasionally goes to her local boxing ring. One thing I really like about this film is that it portrays Lara as an ordinary person and it shows that you don’t need to have superpowers to be a badass hero. Lara’s fighting skills can be seen through several scenes, like when she swings on a large hook to wrestle her backpack that gets stolen by thieves, or when she pierces her trustworthy ice pick through one of her enemy’s chests. I believe that the swift fighting scenes were more successful than traditional explosions of destruction utilized in other action movies. I feel that directors relying heavily on CGI are lazy in their composition of film.
Tomb Raider is a popular franchise that relies heavily on its female protagonist, and for this reason, I believe that Vikander is a perfect fit for Croft. This film is also similar to the Tomb Raider game that was released in 2013. Several suspenseful scenes throughout the film were based on scenes that one would play in the game. A few other small aspects that were similar to the game included the traps in the movie. One scene was when a member of trinity was walking and then encountered a series of spears that shot out of the ground and plunged into the man’s body.
Tomb Raider is a great adaptation of the 2013 video game and adds another great movie to the franchise. Tomb Raider has topped $200 million at the box office and scored a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it earned a 65% for the audience score. Tomb Raider has everything including hidden tombs, booby-trapped cave and even a deadly disease that turns victims into zombies. The last scene of the movie also hinted for a sequel film, which I am now eagerly anticipating.
