Former Servite High School football coach Scott Meyer begins his first season at UHS with a home game against Laguna Hills on Friday, August 24.
Meyer commented that he and the team are “excited to get this season underway Friday against a very good Laguna Hills team.”
“We’ve been working hard and [are] hungry to play a game,” Meyer said.
Meyer was hired in April of last year, shortly after the retirement of longtime staff member and football coach Mark Cunningham.
“[Meyer] is a very good coach and he also brought a great staff with him,” quarterback senior Thomas Keeling said. “We are definitely excited as a team about our potential for this season.”
Meyer is a veteran of the Pacific Coast League (PCL), having previously coached the Corona Del Mar (CDM) Sea Kings, leading them to an undefeated 16-0 season in 2013 and claiming a third consecutive CIF-SS title and the CIF state Division 3 crown, according to the Orange County Register.
Meyer also has coached for Servite High School in the Trinity League, which in 2010 was ranked as the second most challenging league in the country.
Meyer will not be coaching against his former team this upcoming year after CDM’s departure from the PCL for the Sunset League. He will, however, begin coaching against nearby Portola High School after its recent addition to the PCL.
“It would have been nice to compete against CDM but we wish them the best in the Sunset League,” Meyer said.
Overall, Meyer is excited to coach at UHS because “it is such a great school in an amazing community,” and that [he and his staff] “have had a lot of fun coaching this team.”
