Girls Varsity Tennis had a 14-4 victory over Fountain Valley High School at the GOW on Thursday, September 6.
So far, Girls Tennis is 2-0 in the preseason after beating Saint Margaret’s High School last week. History teacher and coach Mr. John Kessler was satisfied with the team’s performance, but remained impartial about the future of the season.
“We can’t go by today; Fountain Valley is not very good, so we’ll find out next week; we [will play] Dana Hills and Campbell Hall, and then we’ll find out how good we are,” Kessler said.
Many of the starting singles and doubles players were subbed out after the early rounds due to the lack of competitiveness.
Sophomore Therese Garcia and senior captain Kamar Alajeely, the team’s number two doubles team, won their match 6-0.
“I feel motivated for the rest of the season and I’m excited to play against more teams with my new doubles partner after the GOW win,” Garcia said.
Senior Cheyenne Crawley and her partner subbed in for Alajeely and Garcia in the second round, winning against the number one doubles team 6-1.
“I enjoyed seeing my friends’ faces in the crowd during the GOW,” sophomore Mya Wang said. “Their cheering allowed me to loosen up and just enjoy playing the game.”
Wang and sophomore Emily Markus easily defeated Fountain Valley’s number one team, giving up only one game.
“I believe we have a very talented team, and therefore, believe that we will go far this season,” Wang said. “We have a solid singles lineup and our doubles teams definitely have the chemistry.”
Junior Cami Brown and senior Dana Feng, returning stars from last year, won their matches 6-0, and 6-1, respectively.
The newest addition to the singles lineup, freshman Jane Lee, won her match 6-0. All three of the singles starters subbed out after the first round.
“I feel like our team has improved from last season and that we can go to finals or even win CIF,” Brown said.
The next home game will be against Northwood High School on Tuesday, September 20 at 3:15 p.m.
