Girls Varsity Tennis had a decisive victory over Corona Del Mar High School 11-7 on Tuesday, September 18 at Racquet Club of Irvine.
“In my mind, the prospects have changed–from what I thought would be an okay team fighting things out with a young group of girls–to now, where I think we’re in the conversation for certainly PCL title and if not CIF championship,” Coach John Kessler said.
Girls tennis is still undefeated and is now ranked first in CIF, after defeating the previous first place team Campbell Hall last week and CDM, who was ranked third.
“Pretty early on we knew we were winning that match; it ended up being 11-7 because we let up,” Kessler said.
The first two rounds guided the direction of the match. After the first round, the team was up 5-1, and then 9-3 in the second round.
“[The team] played really well,” Kessler said. “[Sophomore] Mya Wang and [sophomore] Emily Markus are just unbelievable; they haven’t lost a match in the season.”
The doubles stars Wang and Markus continued that streak by winning all three of the matches, giving up only four games.
Seniors Kamar Alajeely and Jacklyn Yoon were doubles partners, and sophomore Therese Garcia played with Madison Bee, two notable changes to the doubles lineup. With these changes, the number two and three doubles won three out of their six matches.
“Everyone played their game and the new partnerships and synergy within the team is flowing really well,” Garcia said.
The singles star junior Cami Brown won all three of her matches, and freshman Jane Lee proved her skill by winning two out of three matches against a tough team.
“I hope our team will continue to express our determination and fearlessness,” Wang said. “Our team consists of fighters, and this is what I believe allowed us to win our matches against Campbell Hall and CDM.”
The next home match will be against Irvine High School on Thursday, September 27 at 3:15 pm.
