Halloween (2018) is an American slasher film directed by David Gordon Green. The film is the eleventh installment of the Halloween franchise. Though it is only a direct sequel to the original Halloween movie made in 1978, this movie omits nine movies that came. The plot is set 40 years after the original movie and employs most of the cast from the 1978 film. Laurie Strode, the protagonist of the film, is played by Jamie Lee Curtis who reprised her role from the 1978 film. Michael Myers, the murderous antagonist, is played by Nick Castle who reprised his role as well.
Laurie Strode was the only survivor of Michael’s vicious attack on Halloween night 40 years ago. After being locked up in an institution, Myers escapes a bus transfer and heads straight for Haddonfield to resume his killing spree. The final product presents a random trail of murders by Michael. Towards the end of the film, he somehow ends up reunited with Strode for a final showdown.
Though, let’s backtrack to the opening scene of the film, the highlight of the entire production. Featuring some of the best cinematography in the slasher movie genre, the scene features a reintroduction to Michael Myers as two journalists attempt to interview him. The dialogue and plot seemed ordinary, however the directing made the scene truly special. White and red checkered pattern on the prison yard ground combined with a mixture of point of view, close-up and wide shots look beautiful and equally haunting on camera.
The difference between the first scenes and what follows is drastic. The colors go from a hollow grey and yellow generating an eerie feel to bold oranges and blacks, completely destroying the creepy mood. The rest of the film is similar to most slasher movies with a weak plot mixed in with almost scary murder scenes and a confusing script. The film has no defining scary moments. In addition, the killing scenes were boring which is an issue especially since the movie is based on the violence.
However, the movie clearly garnered much popularity as it had grossed over 100 million dollars in the box office since release. The Halloween movie was an overall subpar slasher movie, with a confusing plot and cinematography that did not match its mood.
Halloween was released on October 19, 2018. It currently has a 79% critic score and 75% audience score from Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 7.4/10 on IMDb.
