UHS Varsity Wrestling defeated Beckman High School (BHS) 54-21 at Wednesday night’s GOW on December 14. The 14-man Trojan roster proudly entered the gym as ACDC’s “Thunderstruck” played in the background, then immediately formed its team huddle. The Trojan wrestlers competed in increasing weight classes throughout the night.
UHS had an early 18-0 lead with the help of 113-pound weight class Ethan Maniss (Jr.). Both Captains Jordan Elam (Sr.) and Nicholas Dang (Sr.) picked up six points each, extending the Trojan’s lead throughout the evening. Early in Dang’s match, it appeared he had suffered a painful hand injury. Nevertheless, he continued on to victory.
Strong performances were followed by 145-pound Kohl Hertz (So.) and 152-pound Kaimen Anderson (Jr.) to quiet the Patriots’ early 15 point comeback. Hertz staged a crowd-pleasing takedown in the final five seconds of his first period to gain vital points.
The Trojans would hold BHS to only 15 points the whole night until the Patriots finally managed a six point gain with Jack Hausam’s (Jr.) defeat. Despite having strong battles, 134-pound Lorena Egea (Jr.) and 138 pound Max Hertz (Sr.) took losses as well for UHS.
Following his blowout win to extend the Trojans’ lead 40-15, Elam fired up the crowd with uplifting hand movements.
After the game, he explained his win and the team’s work ethic.
“I thought that we came out as a team and won this as a team” Elam said. “We’ve worked hard, we’ve practiced hard and we killed them.”
Captain Nicholas Dang chimed in on the blowout win as well. “I trained hard for almost a year” he said. “I feel like I’m gonna throw up!”
The Trojan wrestlers have their next match away Friday, December 16, in the Ed Spring Holiday Classic.
