Varsity Wrestling lost to Irvine 18-58 on January 18. This game concluded the home games for UHS wrestling this winter season. Unfortunately, this game ended the team’s three-game league winning streak that came against Beckman, Northwood, and CdM.
The team started off successfully with the only female wrestler on Varsity, Lorena Egea (Jr.), scoring a takedown in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Captain Jordan Elam (Sr.) proceeded to score the second win after a takedown and a three point near fall that led his opponent to finally tap out.
“I’m really proud of myself and everyone else too because we did so much better than last year and I’m just super proud of everyone,” said Egea.
These wins were largely representative of Varsity Wrestling’s resilience this season.
“We played a fair fight, we went hard, and we went out there,” Elam said. “We fought as a team; we wanted to come out here and get the win but we all put all hearts out onto this mat.”
The new head coach was very impressed with the new team he had to coach this season.
“I actually think we did really well,” Coach Steve Shiflett (Athletic Dept.) said. “The matches we did play we won 18-16. Take away all the forfeits for the injuries, head to head we beat them.”
UHS Wrestling has yet to play against Woodbridge next week at its away game, but first it will play the Segerstrom Tournament on Saturday.
