During its last water polo game this year, Girls Varsity Water Polo lost to Woodbridge 8-9. This game concluded with a triple overtime and sudden death, which Woodbridge won on a six-on-five.
The game started with the Team Captain Gauvri Nathwani (Sr.) scoring a lob in the first quarter. Angela Yan (Soph.) and Alison Huxman (Jr.) each scored a shot in the third quarter. Then, Team Captain Chandlyr Denaro (Sr.) tied the score 6-6 with a set shot in the fourth quarter with eighteen seconds left of the game.
In the first overtime, Yan scored a last second half-court lob with her head under the water. Then, Denaro scored another last minute shot at the end of double overtime, making the score 8-8. The third overtime ended with a debated goal on Woodbridge’s side, which the girl shot when the ball was not live. However, the referees gave Woodbridge the point, ending the action-packed game.
For the seniors, it was an emotional game, especially because it was their senior night.
“I thought it was a really good game; the first time we played them, we lost by a couple of goals and it wasn’t as intense. But for this game, we just kept going and we didn’t give up,” Nathwani said.
These girls have been through several changes during their UHS Water Polo careers, such as five coaching shifts in the past four years. Although this year’s journey has ended, their new journey in college begins.
“I’m so glad that was my last game because the team put up a good fight and we showed them what we could do in the water and I will definitely remember it,” Goalie Laura Yang (Sr.) said.
