The Girl’s Basketball team faced off against the Buena Park Coyotes this past Friday, December 13th. Their game against the Buena Park was their tenth consecutive away game. Despite playing on the road, the Trojans defeated the Coyotes soundly, routing Buena Park by a final score of 60-44.
The Trojans started off slow, falling behind by four points at the end of the first quarter. However, they outscored Buena Park by 20 points the rest of the way, capping it off with an impressive 4th quarter, where the Trojans’ defense held the Coyotes to just eight points that quarter.
Sophomore Caitlyn Hane spoke of her team’s resilience and how they renewed their intensity level at halftime.
“It was a close game for the first half, we weren’t making all our shots, and we weren’t working as hard as we could. But I think after halftime, we got it together, our attitudes were better, we were sinking all our threes, stuff like that. I also think our girls on the bench helped a lot, they brought the intensity we needed to win, and helped out on the court when we needed it most,” Hane said.
Senior Captain Claire Kawata also spoke about the adjustments the team made, as well as the team’s mindset going forward.
“We were just playing really good defense, playing hard, rebounding. We need to take this momentum from this win, we’re getting better every game, and we just need to move forward,” Kawata said.
Head Coach Fidel Vargas agreed with Claire, believing the extra emphasis on defense and rebounding was the ‘x-factor’.
“After halftime we were just aggressive on the defensive end and crashed the boards. Our three point shot started to go down, and we swung the ball around more, but it was our defensive and rebounding that had the biggest impact.” Vargas said.
Vargas also stated his belief that this win would be something that could have a positive effect on the team going forward.
“You could feel the energy in the bus ride home, so going into the rest of the season I think it’ll really boost us up from here”.
University’s victory pushed them to 4-6 on the season. Girl’s Basketball’s next game will be against Tustin High School on December 17th, for their first home game of the season.
“It feels really good to finally have a home game. We’ve been on the road all year and haven’t had one at home for a while.” Kawata said.
