Wrestling defeated Northwood High School 47-27 during their match this past Friday, starting off League competition with a win. Despite the win, the team knows not to get overly optimistic, as there is tougher competition to come.
“I beat my guy, and most of the team did too. Even though we won, we definitely gave up some points which we could have kept so we’ll have to work a lot harder to beat better schools like Irvine,” Senior Lev Kruglyak said.
One thing the team looks to work on is their conditioning.
“Overall, I think we need to work a lot more on conditioning so we don’t burn out at the end of our matches,” Junior Dylan Ohashi said.
Ohashi finished third in the tournament, accompanied by Senior Lmaurion Richards. Freshman Daniel Mattair and Junior Rowan Corpus were close behind, in fifth and seventh, respectively.
“Our team did great and I feel we are doing great things,” Richards said.
The victory displayed the team’s potential, and if they continue to make improvements, they could be in for a successful season.
“I thought the team did really well this past match. Although we did well against them, pinning most of their guys, we do need to work on being more aggressive and getting our conditioning up. I look forward to future matches this season because I believe this is a strong team, we could win league finals,” Junior Justin Andre said.
The team’s next home match will be against Portola High School this Wednesday, December 15th.
