The Wrestling team suffered a defeat against Beckman, ending with a score of 66-9. This game was their league finals and this puts the team now at 3rd in league as they head into the C.I.F. playoffs.
“I believe that me as well as the team have to work on our mindset and just getting after it and having fun in our wrestling matches; many times wrestlers lose sight of that and believe winning is the only thing fun in wrestling when it’s not. I’m proud of how the whole team has worked this entire season and I’m excited for next season” Junior Captain Justin Andre said.
Key players throughout the match were Junior Rowan Corpus and Sophomore Zach Haughey, who both won their individual matches. Unfortunately, the rest of the team did not fare as well.
“We gave up 3 byes, which means we didn’t have people at that weight class, so we defaulted points to them” Corpus said. “[However] A lot of our matches, such as Dylan, Justin, Patrick, and Amin were super close losses”.
After making into C.I.F. playoffs for two years running, the team hopes to improve their game before heading into C.I.F. this year.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how the team is going to do this year. This is the most people we’ve qualified since I have come to UNI and I hope that we are able to do really well as a team. I especially have high hopes for our captains who I think are fully capable of qualifying for C.I.F. masters” Junior Captain Dylan Ohashi said.
Wrestling’s next tournament will be C.I.F. playoffs next Friday, February 14th, taking place at Temecula Valley High School.
