The 2020 GRAMMYs Award show was hosted by singer-songwriter Alicia Keys and featured a collection of stunning performances from the music industry’s greatest artists of the year. The show was cast with a somber presence in light of the tragic death of retired basketball player Kobe Bryant that happened the morning of. Keys performed a heartfelt tribute about the power of music dedicated to the late athlete to the tune of GRAMMY nominated Song of the Year, “Someone You Loved,” by Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi.
The show opens with Lizzo’s energetic and lively performance of her songs “Cuz I Love You” and “Truth Hurts.” Lizzo had the most nominations at the 2020 awards show, being nominated in eight different categories and winning three of those nominations.
Tyler, The Creator’s performance that night could only be described as pure, chaotic eccentricism. Intimidating flashing lights lit up the stage, filled to the brim with clones of the artist, sporting the same iconic platinum blonde bob and sunglasses.
18 year-old breakout singer Billie Eilish won the most number of awards that show, taking home four different GRAMMYs. When accepting her award for 2020 Album of the Year, her fourth win of the night, Eilish humbly expresses her admiration for Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” album, graciously mentioning the artist in her speech.
Even with the influx in popularity of unique music, the 2020 awards show drew criticism from avid music listeners on the lacking nominations list and rather predictable winners. Many enthusiastic fans express frustration in Lana Del Ray, another critically acclaimed alternative music artist, not receiving the recognition she deserved for her album, Norman F—ing Rockwell.
Ariana Grande stunned viewers with a gorgeous silver gown, straying away from her usual half-up hairdo for an elegant, sleek ponytail. Billie Eilish rocked a head-to-toe black and green outfit, from her black hair and neon roots to her green turtleneck and long gucci-decorated nails. Billy Porter turned heads with his bedazzled blue jumpsuit that was paired with what can only be described as a lampshade of a hat, one that dangled mobile silver streams down its rim. Lana Del Rey’s outfit managed to blow up on twitter after her humorously admitting to a reporter that she had purchased her silver dress as a last-minute purchase from the mall.
The 62nd annual GRAMMYs featured entertainment performances, stunning fashion moments, and heartfelt musical tributes. The success of Billie Eilish in this awards show is potentially telling of the projection of music and taste with the upcoming decade. It will be fascinating to see if this trend of edgy alternative music in the mainstream continues into the future, or whether it will be replaced with the more traditionally upbeat pop music we have seen in the past.
