Girls Basketball faced off against the Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary Cardinals in their first CIF match on Thursday, February 13th,, and were defeated 47-40. It was a tough way to end the season for University, who had a great year overall, going 9-1 in league play. University fought hard, and the match was close throughout the game, with cutting their deficit to three points or less multiple times in the second half., However, the Cardinals were ultimately able to hold them off.
Despite the loss, Senior Jocelyn Lau was proud of the way the team battled and competed, both during the game and the season overall.
“None of us are pleased with the result, but I think all of us are proud of the way we kept competing and never gave up, even when it looked like they were pulling away. I thought we did well on defense, because our shots on offense weren’t falling but we still didn’t lose by much. I wish I would’ve been better at boxing out their post, because they got a lot of rebounds and really hurt us. We had a tough schedule, we played a lot of games away from Uni, but we were still resilient and always fought” Lau said.
Senior Captain Claire Kawata was reflective on her time playing Basketball for UHS.
“I’ve had a lot of experiences at UNI. There were ups and downs, and it’s disappointing the way it ended, but ultimately it was an experience I’ll look back fondly on. There was a lot of stuff that happened in my four years, and to make CIF in the final year, as a captain, was really nice”.
Lau had similar feelings about this season.
“One of my favorite memories was our game against Beckham, because it was our senior night and my 18th birthday. All my friends came out to watch and I felt so supported and loved and it was so much fun to win with my friends behind me. I’ll remember this season as probably my favorite. It started out rough, but we bounced back and got so much better”.
Five Seniors will be leaving the team next year, including both Captains Aryn Press and Kawata. Still, there will be seven returning members next season, and current Girl’s Basketball Head Coach Fidel Vargas is expected to return come next season.
