On February 1, the University High School (UHS) Science Bowl team won the 2014 Los Angeles Regional Science Bowl held at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. After eight hours of competition, Jiho (Jason) Park (Sr.), Kevin Lee (Sr.), Al Chang (Jr.), Albert Tung (Jr.) and Brandon Chen (Jr.) eventually defeated the teams of five from 23 other high schools in Southern California.
This is the second consecutive year the UHS team has won the Regional Science Bowl. During the Jeopardy-style competition, students had to correctly answer science and mathematics questions. The UHS team won each of its nine rounds and was only behind their opponents twice the entire day.
The UHS team will receive an all-expense-paid trip to compete at the National Science Bowl, which will be held in Washington, D.C. from April 24 to 28. This is the team’s second time competing at the national level. Last year, the team placed first at the regional competition and fourth at nationals.
“Preparing for the competition was difficult since it was large time commitment, especially since I had to run practices, record scores, grade exams and create a final exam,” team captain Park said. “Team members benefit from teamwork and collaboration, a comprehensive understanding about science, improving reaction speed and learning strategic skills.”
During Science Bowl practices, all club members take exams to prepare for competition. The team captain then selects the top five members to be part of the “A team” and compete at the Regional Science Bowl.
