The UHS Girls’ Volleyball team defeated the Woodbridge Warriors 3-0 at home during their senior night game on Oct. 6. The Trojans started off strong and never gave Woodbridge a chance to come back, allowing them to pull off the clean sweep.
Even before the game began, the festivities of the night were apparent in the atmosphere of the gym. The stands were packed with people anticipating the start of the game, ready to watch the long-standing rivalry between the two teams. The large turnout fueled the Trojans and gave them the surge they needed to establish an early lead over the Warriors.
“The crowd’s energy charged the team and allowed us to keep a strong lead throughout the entire first set,” junior Tara Behbahani said.
The Trojans ended up winning the set 25-12, more than doubling Woodbridge’s points. However, the Warriors regrouped in the second set, keeping it close throughout. Despite being within just a few points, the Warriors never took the lead due to multiple self-inflicted mistakes, allowing the Trojans to win the set 25-22.
“We kept our lead throughout the second set by keeping a positive attitude and hype energy, even when mistakes were made,” junior Ava Dreben said.
Finally, the third set commenced and went similarly to the previous one, with the Warriors fighting hard to stay in the game but being outplayed by the Trojans’ consistency. For a final push to finish off the third set, UHS seniors were put into the game, and the crowd erupted. This burst of energy put the nail in the coffin, and the Trojans won the final set 25-21.
Building on their momentum from the win, the Trojans made a strong late-season push and were able to qualify for the CIF playoffs. However, the Trojans’ season came to an end after falling to Royal High School in their first-round matchup.
