As the fall sports season wraps up, we recognize the outstanding performances and leadership shown by our athletes throughout November. Emma Zhao of girls’ golf, Donya Zamani of girls’ tennis, Naomi Gesk of girls’ volleyball and Michael Zakharyan of boys’ water polo are UHS’s November Athletes of the Month.
Girls’ Golf: Emma Zhao
Zhao delivered a consistent and impressive season for the varsity team, helping guide the team through competitive league play. Her steady performances throughout the year contributed to the team’s great start, as they won their first three games handily. One of Zhao’s favorite moments this season was watching the team late in the season. She looks forward to building on her success next year and helping the program continue to grow.
“Our team truly came together during the League Finals,” Zhao said. “Everyone was genuinely celebrating each other’s successes and supporting one another through the nervous wait for the CIF qualifying announcements.”
Girls’ Tennis: Donya Zamani
Zamani played a crucial role in the varsity team’s strong finish to the season, securing key wins in challenging matchups and closing out her high school career with memorable performances. Senior Night stood out as a highlight for her, as her teammates thoughtfully planned every detail of the celebration and she and her doubles partner, junior Avery Hexun, swept all three sets against Northwood earlier that same day. Another defining moment was the team’s second meeting with Sage Hill, which was Zamani’s final high school game.
“One of my favorite memories from this season was sweeping against Sage Hill the second time,” Zamani said. “There were a lot of setbacks in that game, and I’m truly proud of how my partner Avery and I pushed through.”
Girls’ Volleyball: Naomi Gesk
Gesk was a driving force for the varsity team, contributing both offensively and defensively throughout the season. Her leadership on the court helped the team battle through tough league matchups, especially during their comeback win against Woodbridge High School in September. As a senior, she is proud of the team’s efforts throughout the year.
“My favorite memory this season was our Senior Night,” Gesk said. “It was so hype, and it was super fun to get to play with all the other seniors. Everyone was so supportive, and we ended up winning in three.”
Boys’ Water Polo: Michael Zakharyan
Zakharyan played a major role on the varsity team’s competitive November stretch. He helped secure several key league wins that kept the team in strong standing heading into the postseason, like two crucial wins against Irvine in October. He aims to continue developing his game and contributing to even stronger results next season.
“I’m super proud of how much all my teammates grew throughout the season and the bond we developed through hard practices,” Zakharyan said. “All of our consistent hard work led us to be CIF quarterfinalists.”
Congratulations to Zhao, Zamani, Gesk and Zakharyan for their outstanding performances this November.
