With first-semester final exams approaching in a few weeks, students across all grades are studying. Though some students are enjoying the time they have left before the testing season starts, others are consistently reviewing and studying.
For UHS students, there are a variety of ways to get ready for finals. Upperclassmen, in particular, having gained experience in previous years and an understanding of what needs to be improved, revealed several key strategies to achieve better scores.
“Usually, I go over materials that the teacher might’ve provided me for review,” sophomore Reyhan Turrkan said. “It’s also good to look through older material and do a general refresher to make sure that I understand all concepts in class.”
Studying regularly, reviewing the notes and setting a daily routine help Turkkan prepare. Once in a while, she looks back at what she learned to ensure she doesn’t forget the material completely. For students like Turkkan, it is important to preserve notes and classwork rather than throw them away.
“I’d say just to try your best and put the effort in,” Turkkan said.
Turrkan believes that stressing out will not help students with their finals; rather, they should stay calm and relaxed. Other students, however, prefer a more comprehensive approach, drawing on a variety of sources for study material.
“This year, I am going to study during Thanksgiving break by using my old notes, study videos, and asking my teachers questions after returning from break,” sophomore Geetika Duggaraju Peddiraju said. “Thus, [I will be] using Khan Academy, online resources, and asking my mom or brother for help.”
Duggaraju Peddiraju relies on the resources around her, from at school to online to her family members. She also mentioned being proactive in asking questions, because once the test starts, students have to rely on their own knowledge. Duggaraju Peddijaru also advises against cramming, opting instead for a more sustainable long-term study plan.
“I would say not to stress and study at least a week before the finals, and also get a lot of sleep so that you don’t feel tired on the day of the finals,” Duggaraju Peddiraju said.
Duggaraju Peddiraju admitted that she used to leave everything for the last minute and is determined to be more ready this year.
UHS students emphasized the importance of preparing in advance rather than procrastinating to ensure they are adequately prepared for finals. As students move into finals and the second semester, they must make time in their schedule to study daily and steadily.
