In January, these University High winter athletes excelled in their sports.
Boys’ Wrestling: Isaak Hsieh
As one of the team’s senior captains, Hsieh led the Trojans to a huge win against the Portola Bulldogs 45-31, arguably one of their best matches all season. However, Hsieh’s personal favorite match this year was his opening-round match at the Segerstrom Tournament.
“I would say the match that meant the most this month was my first match at the Segerstrom Tournament,” Hsieh said. “I had taken some time off due to draining my cauliflower ear and hadn’t gotten much practice in, but the match ended with a second-period pin for the win, so I knew I still had it.”
Boys’ Basketball: Joshua Thio
Thio is a senior and a varsity captain of the UHS Boys’ Basketball team. Throughout the season, he has been one of his team’s leading scorers, with 109 points in 20 games. To maintain consistent scoring, Thio often has to keep his composure in close games.
“I focus on the game plan that we practiced from the preceding days and on not getting distracted by nervous thoughts,” Thio said.
Girls’ Basketball: Matina Bolourchian
As a varsity captain of the UHS Girls’ Basketball team, Bolourchian has led her team to a higher placement than 216 teams in California. Looking back, Bolourchian reflects on what leadership means to her on the basketball court.
“Leadership looks like building my team up and making sure we are all playing to the best of our abilities, and supporting my team in general,” Bolourchian said.
Congratulations to Hsieh, Thio and Bolourchian for their exceptional performances this winter season.
