On Jan. 30, University High School Boys’ Soccer took the field during a must-win matchup against Laguna Beach. With the season entering its final stretch, a win against Laguna Beach would earn the Trojans a bid to the CIF playoffs.
In the week leading up to the match, the Trojans focused their training on creating offensive opportunities and capitalizing on set-piece plays.
“We did some crossing and finishing drills to work on driving down the line and being efficient in front of the goal,” senior captain Jake Rabold said.
To begin the match, both teams traded possession, with neither squad able to break through the midfield. Strong offensive pressure from both teams kept the game scoreless until the Trojans broke through in the 20th minute. Senior captain Kasra Ghoddousi launched an ambitious shot from outside the box that made its way to the back of the net.
“The most impactful play of the game was Kasra’s first goal,” Rabold said. “Just getting one early has a huge impact, and we carried that energy throughout the game.”
The Trojans used this momentum to continue attacking, eventually earning a free kick opportunity in the attacking third. Ghoddousi delivered a well-placed ball into the box that senior Ishan Vannadil finished cleanly, doubling the lead in the 35th minute.
“Scoring two in the first half set us up for success as we went into halftime very confident,” Ghoddousi said.
As the second half started, Laguna attempted to respond by increasing their offensive tempo and pushing their midfielders forward. However, the Trojan defense remained calm and organized, denying them of creating any meaningful chances.
Midway through the half, Ghoddousi scored again in the 65th minute after finishing a quick attacking sequence, providing him with his second goal of the day. He later completed his hat trick with yet another goal from a free kick in the 73rd minute.
“I played probably the best I had all season,” Ghoddousi said. “I scored three goals and assisted as well. The team was very focused and energetic, which helped us shut out Laguna Beach.”
As the match ended, the Trojans secured a CIF playoff bid and increased their confidence as they prepare for the postseason.
“After winning, we got a spot in CIF, which helps us draw out a plan for the rest of the season,” Rabold said.
The Trojans look forward to their second CIF game away against San Bernardino on Feb. 13.
