On Friday, September 5, University (UHS) dominated Segerstrom High School (SHS) in the first game of the season to secure the win 28-6. This was an especially notable victory since it has been 4 years since UHS last defeated SHS.
In the first quarter, Allahsan Jenkins (Sr.) made a 25 yard run to begin the scoring onslaught. SHS was next to score, but that was the last time they saw the end zone. Just before halftime, Matt Abellaneda (Jr.) powered through the SHS defensive to score a touchdown, bringing the score to 14-6.

With five minutes left in the third quarter, Abellaneda scored again to put UHS safely in the lead with the score 21-6. Three minutes later, Tristan Lee-Jones (Sr.) secured the win by running over two SHS defenders to make the final score 28-6.
Key player Parker Dickey (Sr.) suffered a dislocated collar bone two days before the SHS game. He said, “As a team we had decided that it was time to put an end to our losing reputation. This year our team has shown clear and natural born talent. If we play as a unit and stay as a unit, winning will come easy. The Segerstrom game is a perfect example of that.”
UHS’ next game is on Friday, September 12 at Laguna Beach High School. The team is now 1-0 in the season.
