The University High School (UHS) girls volleyball team competed in the Dave Mohs Tournament, which took place from September 12 to 14. The team placed third out of four teams in its first tournament of the year. The Trojans played in the Division 2 bracket in pool 5, competing against Brea Olinda High School (BOHS), Rosary High School (RHS) and Bonita High School (BHS). Though the girls put up a strong fight and demonstrated a solid team effort, the Trojans were unable to advance to the quarterfinals or semifinals.
On the first day of the tournament, Friday, September 12, the Trojans were defeated by the Brea Olinda Wildcats at Newport Harbor High School. In a tough first match, the UHS team lost 13-25. Despite fighting hard to make a valiant comeback, the UHS team was defeated 18-25 in the second match. The Trojans did not play a third match against BOHS. Later that day, the girls volleyball team also played the Bonita Bearcats. The first match concluded with the score 19-25. Though the Trojans fought back to secure a victory in the second match, scoring spike after spike, they lost to in a close battle, 23-25.
The UHS team did not lose spirit, and returned the next day, Saturday, September 13, prepared to make a comeback in its match against RHS. The Trojans were led by captain Cali Fuller (Sr.), who has been performing impressively since the beginning of preseason with 63 kills and a 49.2 hitting percentage. The Trojans came out strong and played aggressively with a revived sense of momentum, securing victories 25-10 and 25-18 in the first and second games respectively. The girls volleyball team’s victory against the Rosary Royals placed the Trojans in the third place seed of their bracket.
Although the team was not as successful as it hoped to be in the Dave Mohs Tournament, it remains positive and has high hopes for the upcoming season. Ashley Kim (So.), a libero and defensive specialist, said, “I’m still excited for the team this year.”
The girls volleyball team’s next game is September 18 against Tesoro High School.
