On September 20, University High School (UHS) beat Calvary Chapel High School 30-14. The team now has an outstanding winning streak of 3-0. UHS has not won more than three games since 2008, and the last time UHS held a 3-0 record was in 2007.
UHS scored a total of three touchdowns, one in the first quarter from a run by Sam Winder (So.) and another in the second quarter from a 4 yard touchdown pass to Matt Abellaneda (Jr.). During the third quarter, quarterback Wes Jordan (Sr.) threw a 59 yard bullet to Neil Boudreau (Jr.) to score UHS’ third touchdown. Bellal Mohebi (Jr.) said, “When we all saw Wes find Neil open for the 59 yard touchdown, it got our team fired up and gave us the momentum to finish out the half.”
Nick Loveland (So.) also scored three field goals in the second, third and fourth quarters to round out UHS’ score to 30.
Other key players included Abellaneda with a total of 79 rushing yards and Bourdreau with 84 receiving yards.
However, the win came with a cost. Two of UHS’ fullbacks, Winder and John Kang (Sr.), suffered injuries from the game. Winder slightly sprained his ankle and Kang severely sprained his ankle. Both should be able to play against Estancia in UHS’ next game on Friday, September 26.
Star receiver Parker Dickey (Sr.) dislocated his collarbone two days before the season began and has not been able to play since. Dickey said, “Before season started we knew that the chemistry as a team was different than in years previous. We were always hanging out with one another, whether it was at school or outside of school. If any situations arose we would have each other’s backs and that was something that wasn’t too prominent in the past couple of years. Because of this bond we have been able to perform and become a 3-0 team.”
UHS is currently tied with Corona del Mar High School for first place in the Pacific Coast League and is ranked higher than the four other Irvine schools. Coach Mark Cunningham (Athletic Dept.) has high expectations this year for the football team.
UHS will play next against Estancia High at 7:00 PM on Friday, September 26 at home.
