On September 26, University High School (UHS) lost to Estancia High School 10-35, leaving UHS with a record of 3-1. This loss marks the end of UHS’s undefeated winning streak.
In the first quarter, Nick Loveland (So.) scored a 27-yard field goal to put UHS in the lead 3-0. Estancia dominated the next three quarters of the game with five touchdowns.
Star receiver Parker Dickey (Sr.), who just returned to play after a shoulder injury, had a total of 65 receiving yards.
Other key players included quarterback Wes Jordan (Sr.) who managed to run a 1-yard touchdown in the last quarter. He ended the game with 133 passing yards. Matt Abellaneda (Jr.) also showed perseverance through the whole game with 26 rushing yards and 35 receiving yards.
Co-captain John Chung (Sr.) said, “I think our team was really confident going into the game. A little too confident. The success got into our heads and we might not have practiced as hard as we could’ve throughout the week. We’re really disappointed, yes, but we’re going to have neither success nor defeat interfere with our work ethic. We’re never going to stop aiming to go to CIF and you will never see us with our heads down, I can tell you that.”
Fullbacks Sam Winder (So.) and John Kang (Sr.) both sprained their ankles at the game last week against Calvary Chapel. Winder recovered to play against Estancia, but Kang was still injured and could not play.
The Trojans’ next game will be away against Garden Grove on October 2.
