On October 10, University High School (UHS) lost to Woodbridge High School (WHS) 17-20, leaving UHS with an overall record of 3-3 and a league record of 0-1.
UHS came out strong in the first quarter, when Matt Abellaneda (Jr.) caught a 2 yard pass from quarterback Wes Jordan (Sr.) to score the first touchdown of the game.
However, the rest of the game was no match for the Trojans. Woodbridge managed to score 3 touchdowns to pull ahead of  UHS. Early in the fourth quarter, the score became 17-20 when Jordan threw the ball to Abellaneda for his second touchdown. That was the last time the Trojans saw the endzone.
Key player Wes Jordan (Sr.) had a total of 118 passing yards that included the last touchdown of the game; Matt Abellaneda (Jr.) received a pass from Wes, rushing 13 yards to score the last touchdown, ending the game.
Special Teams Nick Loveland (So.) made a 39-yard field goal before the second half.
When asked about his mentality during field goals, Loveland said, “When I kick a field goal I try to think of it as if I were to miss, nothing will go wrong. I know that may not be the best mentality, but it’s worked so far. I also try not to pay attention to the yard line from where I’m kicking from, but once that ball is in the air and the refs put up their arms, you feel this surge of adrenaline and you feel amazing, then you turn your head and hear the crowd go wild and it’s just incredible to see and hear people cheering for you. It’s an indescribable feeling.”
Brent Assayag (Sr.) said, “I was skeptical regarding the field goal, but I shouldn’t have been. Nick’s composure was solid and the team was very impressed. If Nick can keep this up, we have a promising future.”
Co-captain Parker Dickey (Sr.) said, “Losing to Woodbridge was pretty disappointing. I felt like we were the better team.”
Although UHS lost, it had more first downs and completed passes, and had a total of 0 fumbles.
This was a special “Pink-Out” game where everyone wore pink to support breast cancer awareness. WHS’s Associated Student Body challenged UHS to “pink out” UHS’ side of the stadium in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Spectators were encouraged to wear pink Trojan Army shirts, and the team wore pink socks and armbands to show support for the cause.
The Trojans’ next game will be October 17 at home against Beckman.
