University High School’s (UHS) boys water polo team played a difficult match on October 14 in its Game of the Week against Northwood High School (NHS). UHS ultimately lost 6-13.
The first quarter started off with NHS scoring two goals right off the bat. Then with 4:41 left in the first quarter, Kian Matin (Sr.) scored a 5-meter goal. NHS responded with another goal. Daniel Campanaro (So.) fired back with a fast shot to the top of the net. With 1:32 left, Matin scored again with a shot from outside. NHS then ended the quarter with two more goals, with the first quarter ending 3-5 with NHS in the lead.
Within the first two minutes of the second quarter, NHS slammed two goals in the net. UHS could not put any goals in during the second quarter, but goalkeeper Matt Moran (So.) made some impressive stops and played aggressively. He had several steals and made a number of passes to his teammates during offensive plays. The first half ended with a score of 3-7 with NHS in the lead.
In the third quarter, NHS scored two more goals, but Oliver Ma (Sr.) answered back with a goal of his own. NHS scored two more goals toward the beginning of the fourth quarter. Matin battled to score two more goals of his own, ultimately unable to succeed. The match ended with a final score 6-13, with NHS scoring two additional goals towards the end of the fourth quarter.
Overall, it was a frustrating match for UHS. When asked how he felt about the team’s performance, Campanaro said, “We lost to a very well prepared Northwood team today. Going forward we need to clean up our team defense, and put away our 6 on 5 opportunities if we want to have a chance to beat them at their own pool in the next round”.
