Culture problems surround me in the US
I am constantly being asked,
“Where are you from?”
Constantly having to explain,
“No, I’m not American.”
I speak with an accent, I know.
No, I do not eat escargot, and
No, we do not say ‘oui oui’.
I’m in France and still
I am constantly being asked,
“Where are you from?”
Constantly having to explain,
“No, I don’t live here.”
Do I really speak with an accent here too?
Apparently I am foreign everywhere.
No, I do not live off of hamburgers, and
No, I do not live among cowboys.
I’m always so much like the other culture
I have never watched Spongebob:
“So French”
I smile politely at everyone:
“So American”
I’m 5’7’’ but I check the temperature in Celsius.
What am I supposed to say?
Where am I from?
Does it even matter?
I can keep up with two cultures at the same time.
Who says I can’t eat peanut butter and jelly in baguettes?
From now on I’ll just tell people I’m Frenglish
And let them interpret it as they like.
