On Thursday, January 8, UHS girls varsity played its first league game away at Woodbridge (WHS), tying WHS 1-1. From the first whistle, the game was intense; UHS’s offense had many attacks and attempted eight shots. Hanna Ghamari (Sr.) said, “We had many shots on goal and it was very frustrating to find the net.”
In the first half, WHS’s defense was exceptional and UHS had difficulty breaking through it. Even though UHS faced trouble, Paige Metayer (Fr.) was able to maneuver through the Woodbridge defense and score a goal. Metayer said, “Being a freshman, it was amazing to get my first goal at the first league game.” Ending the first half, UHS was ahead 1-0.
Opening the second half, WHS played with determination and scored an easy goal on UHS. Towards the end of the game, both teams began to stumble and a large amount of fouls were called in the last ten minutes.
The UHS goal keeper, Kerri Luttrell (So.), was moved up from JV to play her first varsity game in the goal. She performed well despite the pressure. “It was really fun playing with them [Varsity] for the first time, and I look forward to learning and improving my skills through the rest of the season,” said Luttrell.
UHS’s next game is on Tuesday, January 13 against Beckman High School.
