On February 10, the UHS girls water polo team squared off against Northwood High School (NHS) for its second to last league game. The Trojans got off to a slow start but ultimately pulled ahead to secure a comfortable 12-1 win. The victory brought the team to a 4-5 Pacific Coast League record and an 13-9 overall season record.
The Timberwolves started the game with a quick goal to put them up 1-0, but it would be the last time NHS saw the scoreboard. For most of the first quarter, UHS struggled to score, its shots getting tipped. It was not until Maddie Chen (Sr.) broke the 1-1 tie in the first quarter, putting the Trojans up to 2-1, that the game’s momentum shifted towards a UHS victory. Molly Hudash (Jr.) and Ali Huxman (Fr.) played well defensively, making countless saves throughout the game to hold NHS to a single goal. Shawna Kedzie (Jr.) dominated in the match, scoring six goals.
After the match, Sophia Bajak (Jr.), who scored one of the Trojans’ 12 goals, said, “We weren’t making many of our shots in the beginning, but then we got our heads in the game and started to finally finish, really picking up the intensity.”
The Trojans look to secure a spot in California Interscholastic Federation in their match against Irvine High School on Thursday, February 12.
