UHS girls soccer played its last three games of the year against Northwood (NHS), Beckman (BHS) and Irvine (IHS), ending league with a score of 2-6-3.
The game against NHS on February 10 was a disappointment for the Trojans. The Trojans lost 0-3, marking their fifth loss of the season.
Captain Denali Bollens (Sr.) said, “We’ve been trying very hard this season, but there was one thing we couldn’t do: put that ball into the net! We’ve been creating many chances but we have been very unlucky. Hopefully next year’s team will have an abundance of luck and do better in league.”
The following game was against BHS, ending with a score of 1-1. This game was the most physical game of the year. BHS received nine yellow cards, a Pacific Coast League record. This game was particularly heated because BHS was fighting for its spot in CIF.
Hanna Ghamari (Sr.) made sure BHS did not leave with the three goals it needed to qualify for CIF.
She scored the penalty kick to tie BHS. The team’s back-line and new defensive techniques gave UHS an advantage.
Forward Emma Goolsby (Fr.) explained how much of the team’s defensive backs have improved. She said, “In the beginning of the year we struggled with defense. Because of the new defensive tactics and overall work rate of the team, we have greatly improved and it’s been a pleasure playing as a freshman on this team.”
The last game of the year was against IHS, which ended with a loss of 0-2. UHS had over 50 percent of possession, but IHS’s back line and attackers were extremely skilled.
Tia Divok (Sr.) said, “We were playing well as a team and had the most possession but we could not find the net. They had a very good defense and played well with each other.”
The Trojans improved as an overall team and welcomed new, talented players with the season.
Kathy Guo (Jr.) said, “Next year is my senior year and I’m very excited to see how the team will do. Even though we didn’t do well this season, I believe the next one will be dramatically different. We have very good new players this year and can’t wait to see the incoming freshmen to add to the pot.”
The Trojans finished the year with a record of 2-6-3.
