Okay? is an app designed by a Phillip Stollenmayer, creator of Pancake and Sometimes You Die. The game itself is minimalistic. With a gray theme and a soft classical music background, the app is not revolutionary in its gameplay or design. Players use slingshot movements to guide and bounce a small ball off of various structures to eliminate them. The goal is clear the screen of all structures in one move.
Despite its simplistic appearance, Okay? has a twist. Though technically downloaded as a free game, the developer gives you the choice to “Pay what you want.” It puts the decision in the players’ hands and creates a thought-provoking experience: was the game worth nothing? $1.99? $2.99? And so on. Okay? reached the App Store’s top rankings because of its humility – something that does not exist in many of today’s apps. Unlike games such as Candy Crush or Tetris, where players have to pay to unlock game content, Okay? is free from the effects of big game companies looking to drain a player of their time and money.
Though the game is simple, it keeps many occupied for hours and provides a lovely challenge as the levels get harder. The mechanics of the app are smooth and work well with the gameplay experience. The objective is simple: “Clear the board. Pay what you want.” Leili Golian (Jr.) said, “I honestly really like the game. It seems kind of easy, but once you sit down with it, you’ll get addicted really easily. The physics of the game are realistic, and the simple motions are satisfying.” Okay? has 72 levels, each a uniquely thought-provoking experience. The controls can be difficult, but it all comes down to a lot of experimenting.
Rated 5 out of 5 stars, Okay? is free on the App Store. Choice of payments start at $1.99.
