On April 15, UHS swam an away dual meet against Corona del Mar (CDM) High School.
The girls team lost to CDM 75-95. UHS placed first in the 200 medley relay: the A team of Lauren Weins (Sr.), Joyce Yang (So.), Kathy Lim (Sr.) and Princess Ferguson-Nguyen (Jr.) lowered its California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) consideration time to 1:55.57. In the 400 free relay UHS’s A team (Anne Jang (So.), Lim, Claire Jang (Fr.) and Ferguson-Nguyen) took first once again, but CDM’s A team did not show up to this relay. Many swimmers reached season bests, including Alondra Ortiz (Fr.) earning her first CIF consideration time in the 100 backstroke. Girls captain Lim said, “We have the talent and the drive; it’s just a matter of finishing. We need to be the first to finish at the wall every time and we’re lacking that extra motivation that’ll get us that win. I believe in us though and I know we’re going to get it soon”.
UHS boys defeated the CDM boys team 107-63, winning 8 out of 11 events. Many CDM boys could not catch UHS swimmers, such as Alejandro Ortiz (Sr.) who took first in the 200 freestyle by a full 3 seconds, William Hofstadter (Sr.) who took first in the 50 and 100 freestyle and Daniel Tran (Sr.)  who won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Tran’s first place finish was followed by Jarod Yoshihara (Jr.) and Andrew Knoell (So.) finishing second and third to sweep the 100 backstroke. UHS also swept the 100 freestyle with Hofstadter, Alejandro Ortiz and Matthew Wong (Sr.) finishing first, second and third. Matthew Yong (Sr.) said “I’m really excited for this season. The team is looking good and I feel like we’re pretty stacked but we can’t let it go to our heads. We have to be mentally ready for league finals but more importantly, CIF. I’d love nothing more than to end my senior year with another CIF ring.”
UHS will next swim against Northwood in the Game of the Week on April 22.
