The UHS Choir department is holding its first concert of the year and will be showcasing classical pieces by the two UHS choirs as well as the advanced Madrigals choir.
Mr. Justin Olvey (Visual and Performing Arts Dept.) said, “This is our introduction to concerts for the year; it will teach concert etiquette and the formality of these concerts. It’s about the rules of classical music performance.”
The choir department has put in countless hours of hard work and practice to perfect the intricate pieces that fall into this musical genre. “We literally passed out music the first day of school and we’ve been working ever since,” said Olvey. Having worked tirelessly for two months, he hopes that the audience will thoroughly enjoy the Madrigals’ renditions of pieces such as John Farmer’s 14th Century English Magical and Frank Tichelli’s Earth Song.
Vani Dewan (Jr.), a soprano in the UHS Madrigals Choir, said, “I’m feeling super excited! Choir concerts are some of the best parts of the school year. I love the music we make.” Dewan is looking forward to showcasing the choir’s talents and especially eager to perform the Mozart Requiem “Dies Irae.”
Choir club president and accompanist Danica Silan (Sr.) encourages others to be involved in or experience vocal performances. “Choir is a way to express yourself and is one of the few opportunities for upperclassmen and underclassmen to share a class together,” said Silan. Despite the increasing popularity of modern music, she hopes the audience will appreciate the fundamental elements of classical music. Silan said, “Classical music is important in opening one’s mind. There’s more to music than just pop.”
The concert will be held on Wednesday, October 14th from 7 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. in the Big Theater.
Tickets are $5 presale, $6 at the door with ASB and $7 without.
