After Wrestling finished second in the Pacific Coast League (PCL) last year behind Irvine High School (IHS), the boys hope to improve on their previous success to finish first this year.
“We were second in league last year and we hope to improve on that and make a run for first,” Coach Mr. Peter Alix (English Dept.) said.
The UHS team has improved over previous years to become one of the best teams in PCL.
“I’m looking forward to see how our team will do this year. We had many different athletes from other sports join wrestling and it’s exciting to see the potential they all have,” Lado Dolidze (Sr.) said.
Some of the star wrestlers to look out for this season are 120-pound Dan Gilbertson (Sr.) and 182-pound Jordan Elam (Sr.).
The key to the team’s success will be integrating the new wrestlers into the team and also making small improvements to take first place in the league.
“The wrestlers have to work on fine-tuning their technique,” Alix said.
Wrestling began competition on December 4, when the Frosh/Soph team placed first out of three teams at the Western Tournament. Varsity Wrestling will compete with rival IHS on December 12 in the Irvine High School Tournament.
