Boys Varsity Water Polo started the season with a loss against Aliso Niguel High School, losing 7-17, on Tuesday, August 29.
The first quarter started off with Aliso Niguel scoring seven goals before team captain Joe Nagy (Sr.) scored the first point for the Trojans towards the end of the quarter. The score was 1-7 at the end of the quarter.
“This year’s varsity team has many new, young players that have never competed in the varsity level,” said head coach Jesse Briggs (Athletics Dept.). ”So we gotta keep up the work in practice and try to fix our weaknesses.”
Later in the second quarter, Aliso Niguel expanded their lead by scoring two more points, while Kyle Mumm (Sr.) scored a point, ending the second quarter at 2-9.
Wolverines fans filled the stands, creating a difficult environment for the Trojans to play in. A large majority of the spectators were supporting the away team. “It was difficult to keep momentum due to the overwhelming cheer of the away team whenever they scored,” said Pono Tsang (Jr.)
Although UHS scored more points in the second half than they did in the first, the Trojans still lost by 10 points.
“I still think we played a good game today,” said Andrew Weller (Sr.). “We did better than last year when going against Aliso. Our defence was particularly strong today, we pressed really hard, and shut down a lot of their offensive plays.”
The Trojans are set to face Laguna Hills away later this week on Thursday, August 31.
